(Comments) I was there when CES started out at the Wilshire Blvd. Temple
and moved when it changed locations (a lot!). Looking back, CES was a great
way to make friends, learn, and we had the best teachers! I left CES in 1982,
and I always think back to who I knew and what they are doing now.

Comments We graduates from the 80's of the last century must seem pretty ancient to all the kids at LACES now. Of course, we all are, I trust, actually just classics at this point ;-)
Nice to have this site!

(Comments) LACES was a special learning center: socially, academically and culturally. I don't regret the LACES experience and I feel lucky. Regular high schools may have offered sports and tons of extracurricular activites, but we were like an unusual, close family consisting of very unique members. You can't buy that kind of experience. We were truly unusual people.

(Comments)  Wow, it is great to see what happened to (most) everyone!  I checked on the LACES _official_ web page and was pleasantly surprised to see that Ms. Williams (my Senior homeroom teacher) is still there!
It has been nice reading others’ memories  some of which have triggered memories of my own, so I’ll share them.  I
remember taking orchestra at Wilshire Temple way back when.  When we practiced for the concert, we got to use the main
auditorium which was nicer than the music room, or the other auditorium.  I remember the ceiling had little squares carved
in it, which got smaller as you went up, so the ceiling looked even bigger going up.  One day, I stumbled on the organ
room ? nothing but a room full of organ pipes.  It was impressive.  I wonder if that old organ is still there?
Remember the school logo?  It looked like three wooden blocks carved in the shape of the letters C E and S.  They gave an
iron-on decal of the logo to everyone, which I ironed onto my canvas bookbag.  It was pretty cool then.  Does CES still
have the same logo?
What about Mr. Buckner?  I remember being somewhat afraid of him, then one day we got into a shouting match in front of
the Calc class.  I ended up in the principal’s office (Ms. Collins, bless her heart, is STILL THERE!) again…  Afterwards,
Mr. Buckner & I discussed the fight and I got to know him better.  Later on, I looked back on all of the “I love Mr.
Buckner Club” pictures in the yearbooks with sadness.  We were pretty cruel -- sure, he was crusty, but he didn’t deserve
that.  So, are we EVER going to have a reunion?  My story to date is…
After college, I got a nasty job at a life insurance company.  That lasted for about 2 months.  I started calling everyone
I knew to see if they could get me a job wherever.  “The” call occurred when I called a friend I used to work with in
Santa Monica.  His number was disconnected, but the new number was 704 (Charlotte, North Carolina).  I ended up working
for First Union bank in Charlotte.  That job lasted exactly 6 weeks (not a good record here).  The next job was network
contract work.  I traveled mostly up and down the east coast, working short-term (2 weeks to a few months) in New York,
Boston, Philly, Raleigh, Ft. Collins, CO and Kansas City, MO.
Needless to say, living out of a hotel for months a time is enough to make one nuts.  The only person I had regular
contact with was my travel agent, Carron.  I convinced her that moving in with me was a good idea.  She agreed, and when I
found a better job (no travelling!) in Houston, Texas, she agreed to move with me.  We’ve been married for 2 years!
I just bought a house, so I’ve fulfilled most of the American dream, right?  Kids?  I’m not sure.  Not yet, anyway.

(Comments) C.E.S.! How many of my fellow Alumni can recall the day they first step off that big yellow bus and walked into the Wilshire Temple to attend school and take part in that grand experiment called "The Center for Enriched Studies." Can you recall the feelings you experienced when you became aware that you would be attending school with a wide diversity of children from different races, backgrounds, and cultures. A playground full of Asians, Blacks, Hispanics, Middle Easterners, Whites, and all others in-between. What a concept a Magnet School! While my neighborhood friends attended their local public schools schools which tended to pride themselves on throwing their pupils a "well rounded" basketball or football program, I was attending C.E.S., a school which prided itself on throwing it's pupils a "well rounded" education. I'm sure many of you can recall those white canvas book bags given to each student during that first year. "Welcome students, here's your book bag and iron C.E.S. logo...enjoy! And by the way, here's a gang of text books to put in your bag. These books will cover the curriculum of your 6 classes." Can you remember thinking, "Six classes! I'm only in the 5th grade." I can still hear my friends in the neighborhood shouting, "here comes the Bookworm", as I lugged that heavy canvas bag overfilled with books in one hand and a trombone case that was taller than I was in the other. How many of you can recall other kids asking,"what school do you go to?" And just like clock work after you told them, you braced yourself for the old response, "Center for whaaattt?" or "C.E. whaaattt?" Can you remember the never ending homework assignments and study time needed to succeed at C.E.S?. Do you recall asking yourself , "is today a 1,3,5 day or is it 2,4,6 day," and then realizing once you got to school you brought the wrong homework, again? Do you remember the joy of finally getting our own campus. Yes, lockers, a pool and a gym! "Oh, by the way, can't use the gym or the pool....not earthquake proof." But, it was our own campus! Thank you C.E.S & my fellow C.E.S.'ers." Thanks the memories, education, & motivation to succeed in life!

(Comments)  Wow, time has gone by so fast! I can't believe that 14 years ago we had our graduation at USC Bovard Auditorium.
I remember my first day at LACES on the Wilshire Blvd. site.  I was only in the 5th grade.  The first LACES teacher I met was
Pat Hinson.  Do you remember all of the current events we discussed during Mr. Hinson's world history class?  I was lucky to
attend such a school with excellent teachers.  Presently, I live in Orange County with my husband and our little pug.

Comments: I was there the first three years that C.E.S. existed -- and I remember those years better than most of my high school years spent elsewhere. Mr. Peha, Ms. Williams, Ms. Ray, Ms. Schroeder, Ms. Kerson, Mr. Otterness, Mr. Hinson, Mr. Sidy, Mr. Robbins. . . I have the BEST memories of all of you. Where else could a 5th grader take Egyptian History and photography? To the person who wrote about the water balloon fights in the yard of the temple -- I remember them, too! So funny. C.E.S. was very special and hopefully still is.
