Grade 1 - Games

How to model the writing process for the Games unit.
Be sure to bring in actual board games for students to see, touch, and play. Before asking students to go through any stage of the writing process, first model that stage by creating a cooperative paragraph (a paragraph that you will write together as a class) about games. -Mathew Needleman


Teachers can create a Thinking Map with students as they brainstorm all the games they know:

Students will write much more if they are allowed to draw out their ideas first. Here Mr. Needleman models a prewriting drawing for students, showing them how to include details such as feelings and labels which will help later when drafting.

Students then assist the teacher in completing a draft of the story idea which can then be revised right in front of students as the teacher reorders sentence strips, tears out unwanted words, and adds detail.

The teachers does not emphasize spelling at all until the proofreading stage of the writing process. For the most part, students are responsible for sounding out their own words except for unit related words and words that are a common problem for the whole class. Here are examples...
